Soil Investigation/Remediation
Grand Junction, Colorado
A Phase 2 subsurface investigation was conducted at a former bulk oil distribution facility in Grand Junction, Colorado. Surface stains on soil underlying surface gravel indicated potential oil contamination within a former product storage area. Up to 5 above-ground storage tanks had been previously stored at the site. At the request of the land owner, Pennzoil-Quaker State initiated a Phase 2 investigation. Western Water & Land personnel designed the investigation plan and obtained verbal approval to implement the work from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). Surficial gravel was removed and apparent contaminated soil was excavated in 1-foot lifts. Three lifts of soil were ultimately excavated, sampled, and temporarily stored on site to await the results of chemical analysis. All soils passed state criteria for poly aromatic hydrocarbons but the first lift, containing the greatest amounts of total petroleum hydrocarbons, was allowed to aerate for one week before backfilling the excavation. A Site Investigation and Closure Report were prepared and the site was given state-approved closure status.
